HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – While it was homecoming for the Red Raiders it was anything but a celebration with undefeated Campbell coming to the North Shore and leaving with a 21-13 win.
Sabers quarterback Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele silenced the sea of red, showcasing why he’s the top recruit in state.
The Cal commit threw for 239 yards and one touchdown, but despite the clinic he put on, Sagpolutele credits the other side of the ball with key stops late in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
“The defense was amazing they only held them to 13 points and they just let us get the easy touchdowns so credit to the D-line, the Linebackers they stepped up big time,” said Sagpolutele.
On the other side, late season transfer quarterback Matai Fuiava entered the game midway through the first quarter getting his first taste of Hawaii high school football.
The former Saint John Bosco QB ended the night with 174 yards and one touchdown.
Fuiava came to the islands with just a few days to learn the playbook and get aquatinted with the Red Raiders.
“We’re gonna take this bye week really seriously we’re not gonna take it lightly. Everyday at practice we’re gonna gel, we’re gonna get in the playbook, dive deeper so we can expand it and not just have five plays,” said Fuiava.
For senior captain Mana Carvalho, he’s not letting this loss get the team down and says once the postseason starts, it’s a brand new ball game.
“We’re gonna make it to the playoffs so were gonna see Mililani and Campbell once again and everyone seen what we did against Kapolei. It’s just going back to the drawing board and being able to talk things out and see our mistakes,” said Carvalho.
Both teams say they have a lot to work on but can’t wait to play each other again in the postseason.
